Privacy and GeoTagging
Everyone needs to monitor their privacy with diligence. Today’s world and available technology are eroding our privacy at a rate most of us are unaware of. Oftentimes, privacy can equate to safety. Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites allow us to communicate with others in an easy manner – but we may be sharing more information than we know. (including your current location). Craigslist ads can be giving out your address to the world without you knowing it – and you are the one that provided it! (watch video below)
Privacy is a good thing and needs to be maintained. The phrase “I don’t have anything to hide” should never leave your lips. You have EVERYTHING to hide and should make conscious decisions about what you make public, not the other way around. We don’t need to be afraid, but we do need to be aware - unscrupulous people continually find ways to use information that has been made public against us. Online information rarely disappears – it is stored/archived and can be retrieved years later (see: http://www.archive.org/web/web.php), so the only way to protect yourself is to not make the information available in the first place.
Watch this video on GeoTagging and take the appropriate actions with information you post online.
Now, it’s up to you.
